Alynn-Mags: A collaboration

Alynn-Mags-DSC07218

The first collaboration between Amanda Lynn and Lady Mags we stumbled upon was this large production on Duboce at Valencia Street in the Mission District of San Francisco. Since that time we have seen many more of their pieces on the street and in art galleries.

Their work came to the attention of Todd Dayton of Fallout Pictures when he discovered them on our site. He ended up spending time with them this past summer when they prepared and painted the small mural that is the subject of this video. That mural coincidentally happens to be on a different wall in the same location where we first discovered the newly formed team.

Amanda Lynn and Lady Mags artists are San Francisco Bay Area residents. Together they have over two decades of painting experience and are known as Alynn-Mags Productions. They are immediately recognized for their large scale spray paint and acrylic brush paint mural combinations. In their fine art collaborations, they merge their different mediums and techniques to create seamless pieces. Lady Mags often works with abstract watercolor imagery, which Amanda Lynn incorporates into her detailed illustrations.

Estria Foundation Battle and Sunday Paint Jam

Look/EV (Hawaii)

Look/EV (Hawaii)

Many of you may have heard of and attended the Estria Battle organized by the Estria Foundation and held for six years in Oakland. Are you aware that right after that event they have a much smaller event that Estria started back in 2009 that they call the “Sunday Paint Jam”. The purpose of the Jam is a way for out of town Estria Battle contestants to use up the remaining paint they had from the battle and enjoy a relaxing, stress free day to execute their preference of graffiti art versus the battle event day, where it’s quite stressful and competitive.

What is very surprising is where the jams have been held. The jams have been held at public schools in Oakland. Elaborate murals have been painted at public schools for years for the students and by the students. But expect the unexpected from the Estria Foundation that is actively involved in engaging the youth. So what better place than a school.

Their mission is to create art in public spaces locally and globally with artists, youth, educators, and activists in order to raise awareness and inspire action in the movement to resolve human and environmental issues.

They encourage the youth to be included in decision making and provide them with learning opportunities. This winter they have a calendar on their website listing Youth Art Workshops at the Oakland Library that they are presenting with the Oakland Public Library. There are only three remaining events on this calendar that you might like to check out and pass along especially to families in Oakland. Estria.Org

What better place to engage the kids visually and encourage the development of their artistic talents than schools and live their mission. The first Sunday Paint Jam was started at a Elmhurst School / Academy Alliance off of 98th and Birch in East Oakland where a past Estria Battle competitor taught graffiti classes. Besides 2 events of Sun Paint Jams there, the Estria Foundation used the school as a training or practice grounds.

Castlemont-20131030_0107

In 2011, Estria moved the Sunday Paint Jam to Castlemont High School as they graciously allowed them to paint their school. In 2013 they returned for an invite-only Sunday Paint Jam at Castlemont High School. We visited the school this past October after the jam and were unprepared to see the amount of the murals on the walls. One student very happily and graciously volunteered to show us some of the murals when we popped in expectantly after school and asked where the murals were. We took photos of some of the art to give a peek of what is there. If you go Castlemont be discrete and respectful of the school and the students. It is their special place.

2013 The 16 Most Popular photos

2013

During 2013, Street Art SF photographed over 1600 pieces of art on the streets of San Francisco and Oakland. They ranged from small stickers and stencils to graffiti characters and large murals and pieces. Most of the art in San Francisco was done during 2013. With major contributions from Fuming Guerilla, Graff Hunter and Nite Owl we were able to cover Oakland with a mix of current and prior years.

Putting aside outside factors beyond our control, like Facebook changing their algorithm, we looked at the number of page views per item on Streetartsf.com as well as the number of likes and re-blogs on tumblr and facebook to determine which pieces were the most popular. Notably there were quite a few artists who were consistent heavy “hitters” but did not have art in top posts. The art is shown in alpha order.

880 Pipes

Oakland-Pipes-201305-DSC04417

2013 marked the end of the Oakland pipes at 9th Street and Pine in West Oakland. If you live in the SF Bay Area and are an artist or street art follower you have already felt the loss. For those of you who are not familiar with the pipes, it was a playground for both writers and muralist for the past several years.

9th and Pine

In March, 2009 Caltrans awarded MCM Construction a contract to replace overpasses and ramps along the Interstate 880 corridor located between Hayward and Oakland. The project was scheduled for completion this year. It required gigantic round pipes that were to be submerged into the ground and filled with reinforced concrete to support the over head roadway. The pipes were stored on a several acre lot located a few miles down the freeway in West Oakland. On a need be basis they were hauled off to the construction site.

9th and Pine

Initially the existence of the yard was not well known but overtime it became open season attracting viewers and doers. The pipes were painted on the exterior and as time slipped by the interiors were painted as well including the giant crane that was used to lift them onto the trucks for their ride down the freeway. Empty spray cans littered the grounds and writing covered the freeway wall bordering one side of the lot. On any given day when we stopped by we might find the place empty or hear muted voices drifting from unknown directions since you could not see around the pipes. The locals who drive that freeway said it was quite a sight to see the painted pipes suspended over the freeway.

Some of the pipes are supporting this overpass at 5th Avenue in Oakland. If anything ever happens to the overpass it will be another anthropological moment for those who discover the pipes in the rubble.

As a last hurrah we posted many more photos not previously shared. Most of the photos were taken in 2013. Oakland Graffiti Pipes Enjoy!

Artists and Galleries with online shopping

Art Galleries and Online Stores

We have been contacted by viewers wanting to know where they can purchase art and other products by some of the artists they see on the street. We randomly compiled this short list that is a sampling of what is out there. In the process, we noticed the Big Cartel is a popular shop platform for artists. You can find other artists there who are not on this list. Some galleries like 1AMSF show art by graffiti writers and character artists (Bode, Vogue, Optimist, Jurne…) that you do not readily see on their sites so be specific in your inquires.

Eddie Colla – It is only stealing if you get caught in San Francisco, Ca

Oakland based artist Eddie Colla just curated and participated in a show at the Ian Ross Gallery called Made in China. The purpose of the show was to probe our underlying assumptions as a society to the originality, intellectual property and the value of art. He and the other artists who participated in the show created original pieces of art then shipped them to China for reproduction. The results were displayed side by side in the show.

Carve SF

photo-3-web-

Earlier this month Hub Strategy hosted Carve San Francisco, the first ever international sand sculpture competition held in the city of San Francisco. The event was held on the parking lot of Sports Basement in the Presidio. 400 tons of sand was delivered to the site where it was molded and sculpted into amazing works of art over a five day period by artists who were invited from around the world. Amongst the sculptors we met during this event were Jookeng Tan,Chris Guinto, Melineige Beauregard, Wilfred and Edith Stijger of the Netherlands and Lawrence Noble, Chairman of Academy of Art University’s Sculpture Department and famous for creating the ‘Yoda Fountain’ for George Lucas in the Presidio.

Carve-DSC07654

During the event visitors stopped by daily to watch the sand being prepared for carving and see the pieces emerge as the carvers used everyday looking implements. The day we dropped in the sculptures were at different stages in the process. Sand was being poured into large rectangular boxes with water layered on top. Carvers were in some of the boxes pounding down the dirt in a similar manner as Lucille Ball in the famous I love Lucy TV episode with the scene where she is stomping grapes in a large wine barrel.

Carve-DSC07655

There were other pieces where carvers were removing the wooden boxes to reveal sand blocks with surfaces they were smoothing to begin chiseling. Some sculptures were already well along where the piece had emerged and the artists were fine tuning them with a pile of wet sand at the base.

On the final three days while the carvers were still working on the pieces sponsor tents opened, Off the Grid food trucks appeared along with artists passionate about surfing, surf boards and art. There were activities to engage the people who came to the event including a $1 vote for their favorite sculpture that benefited the San Francisco Chapter of Surfrider Foundation and Sustainable Surf.

Bronzing the Silly Pink Bunny

Lower-Haight-DSC00210
The Silly Pink Bunny by Jeremy Fish that has graced the corner of Laguna and Haight in San Francisco for several years was demolished last week. The street art walls surrounding it will be removed as well to make way for a housing development that is already in progress.

All the wonderful art we enjoyed on this corner for the past few years was the result of the Haight Street Art Center working with the art community and UC Berkeley the owner of the site.

Due to the success of this project, the developer has agreed to work with the community for find a permanent home for a bronze bunny and the street art murals. The Haight Street Art Center has established a Kickstarter to raise $50,000 by November 2nd for this project. The Lower Haight Merchant and Neighborhood Association has already kicked in funds. They need your help to fully fund it.

Please read the short history about this street art location and bunny and support their cause.
