Earlier this month Hub Strategy hosted Carve San Francisco, the first ever international sand sculpture competition held in the city of San Francisco. The event was held on the parking lot of Sports Basement in the Presidio. 400 tons of sand was delivered to the site where it was molded and sculpted into amazing works of art over a five day period by artists who were invited from around the world. Amongst the sculptors we met during this event were Jookeng Tan,Chris Guinto, Melineige Beauregard, Wilfred and Edith Stijger of the Netherlands and Lawrence Noble, Chairman of Academy of Art University’s Sculpture Department and famous for creating the ‘Yoda Fountain’ for George Lucas in the Presidio.

During the event visitors stopped by daily to watch the sand being prepared for carving and see the pieces emerge as the carvers used everyday looking implements. The day we dropped in the sculptures were at different stages in the process. Sand was being poured into large rectangular boxes with water layered on top. Carvers were in some of the boxes pounding down the dirt in a similar manner as Lucille Ball in the famous I love Lucy TV episode with the scene where she is stomping grapes in a large wine barrel.

There were other pieces where carvers were removing the wooden boxes to reveal sand blocks with surfaces they were smoothing to begin chiseling. Some sculptures were already well along where the piece had emerged and the artists were fine tuning them with a pile of wet sand at the base.

On the final three days while the carvers were still working on the pieces sponsor tents opened, Off the Grid food trucks appeared along with artists passionate about surfing, surf boards and art. There were activities to engage the people who came to the event including a $1 vote for their favorite sculpture that benefited the San Francisco Chapter of Surfrider Foundation and Sustainable Surf.
