During the month of August 58 artworks were digitally displayed on billboards, bus shelters, in subways and other advertising channels across the United States. There were as many as 50,000 installations scattered in large and small communities.
The art was by American artists, reflecting American history and culture up to current times, touching on different styles, periods and aspects of American life. The art was selected from the collections of The Art Institute of Chicago, Dallas Museum of Art, LA County Art Museum, National Gallery and the Witney Museum of American Art.
This outdoor exhibition was organized by Richard Reed of ArtEverywhere who conceived the idea and launched a successful show in the UK in 2013 and mounted another show there this year. He coordinated efforts in the United States with the participating museums and the Outdoor Advertising Association of America.
The purpose of the program was to engage the public in art by encouraging them to incorporate it into their daily lives though study, participation and visits to local museums.
We stumbled upon this exhibit in West Oakland the last week it was up and took a few photos in San Francisco to give you a glimpse of the art and how it was displayed.
