Two of San Francisco’s most iconic artists merge their respective crafts, photography and painting, to create the City’s exhibition of the year. Misha Vladimirskiy and APEX, aka Ricardo Richey, have teamed up to curate a body of specially crafted images that represent our charismatic City By The Bay. Vladimirskiy’s signature noir-era black and white polaroids of San Francisco, complemented by APEX’s striking color palette of spraypaint and acrylic, speak to the dynamism and movement of San Francisco. The juxtaposition of still black and whites with vibrant colors and energizing forms evoke memories of where the city has been and implications of changes to come, all while comforting us with the notion that San Francisco will always hold our hearts.
APEX aka Ricardo Richey was born in San Francisco, CA in 1978. He is a street artist who creates colorful abstract patterns through the use of spray paint. Part of the Gestalt Collective that engages in collaborative murals in San Francisco, Apex curated mural projects on Bluxome Alley, other districts of San Francisco, and the SFMOMA display windows in association with St. Johns Community Center (San Francisco, 2002). His work has been shown extensively both in the Bay Area and abroad. He was the artist in residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts (2007), and was featured in documentaries and publications regarding the Mission District in San Francisco. Client commissions include Outside Lands, Spotify, the Puma lounge at the America’s Cup, Scion, Red Bull, Zynga, GoDaddy, Starbucks, and Adobe. Instagram: @apexer
Misha Vladimirskiy was born in the Soviet Union, but immigrated to the US in 1992. Before falling head-first into photography, he explored the world of biology at Stanford University, only to quickly realize that sitting behind a desk for 8 hours a day wasn’t the life he wanted. Vladimirskiy soon switched to photography and received a BFA from CCAC. His work has appeared in SPIN, FHM, NME and shows up daily in 7×7 Magazine. For over 15 years, Vladimirskiy has been involved in the San Francisco business and art communities. He has photographed some of the most prolific and notable musicians, celebrities, fashion brands, events, and venues in the world. Director of Photography and partner at Butchershop Creative, Vladimirskiy currently lives and works in San Francisco. Instagram: @polaroidmisha
