San Francisco artist Jason Mitchell unveils the maturation of his body of work Dream Away at 111 Minna Gallery on display May 1st through the 30th (opening reception on May 1st from 5pm – late). The photography series captures figurative studies of subjects moving through a liminal space resulting in a “severely delicate yet quietly provocative body of work.” The work presented includes framed prints, 2’ x 8’ silk banners, and two video installations providing viewers with an immersive and cohesive display.
Of the series Jason says, “I am fascinated with the journey that includes an awakening of one’s self. With Dream Away I wanted to capture the sense of a person who was emerging — being pushed from one reality to another — traveling through a between state on their way to complete a metamorphosis. I ask my subjects to explore a loss of control with a sense that they are being guided, pushed and pulled, by another sentient being, as they make their way to a new self. They represent the soul of a creature on a journey through the limbo that connects their past understandings to something unknown.”
Jason is a multi-faceted creator with experience as a director, cinematographer, photographer, and editor with a focus on narrative applied to a medium. He is known for his digital artistry accomplishments with partner in crime Stacey Ransom under the brand Ransom & Mitchell.
Dream Away is being presented for the first time as a complete series at 111 Minna. The work has already been noticed for its selection as a finalist for Critical Mass 2014 by Photolucidia.
