Emerging artists are making their way from the street into the home, office building and other public establishments.
Last month we went looking for an Ursula X Young mural at the luxury Grand Hyatt Hotel by Union Square in San Francisco. To our surprise we discovered much more. Upon entering the lobby we found other large pieces of commissioned art by San Francisco based artists commanding center stage in the lobby and a very helpful concierge desk enthusiastic about the art.

The concierge desk informed us the owners of the hotel enjoy art and when they embarked on a remodel four years ago they wished to showcase and support the local art community. They reached out to local Mission District based art gallery Luna Rienne Gallery to curate art for their public spaces and a top floor room used for private functions. The art was created by seven artists specifically for identified spaces with defined parameters and complete freedom of expression. Two years later Luna Rienne arranged for Jud Bergeron to make two sculptures for the lobby.

Luna Rienne documented the process with a video by Martha Traer Martha Traer and Colin M Day with clips of the artists painting the canvas. While several of the artists are accustomed to creating large scale art on the sides of buildings and fences, this art was the largest scale indoor art they had created.

There are plaques next to each piece of art with the artist name, a short bio and QR code to access the artist website. We encourage you to view Mario Martinez and Damon Soule’s art while sipping a glass of wine in the bar, enjoy Reuben Rude’s mural having a bite to eat in the dining room, study David Choong Lee’s art in the lobby while waiting for a friend and take a selfie or photo by Laura Kimpton’s love sculpture in the courtyard they share with the new Apple store. To see Erik Otto’s and Ursula Young’s triptychs you will have to attend an event in the room at the top.
