We hope you join us for the 8th year of Pasion for Frida. A celebration of art honoring the life and passion of Frida Kahlo. For the past 7 years the exhibit has been curated by Bird Levy (Polu Manu Productions) and hosted at Puerto Alegre in San Francisco’s Mission District. We are thankful to have had a place to share the many talented artists that have participated in the show over the years. This year the show moves to a new venue, Sanchez Contemporary in Oakland, curated by Maria Sanchez & Bird Levy.
Frida Kahlo de Rivera was born in Coyoacán, Mexico. Frida Kahlo is best known for the “pain and passion” in her self-portraits. Kahlo did not originally plan on becoming an artist. After entering a pre-med program in Mexico City, she was seriously injured in a streetcar accident. Over a year’s strict bed rest, she began to paint. At 22 she married artist & muralist, Diego Rivera. Their passionate, tumultuous relationship survived infidelities, divorce and remarriage. Her poor health and her inability to have children were only a few of the many heartbreaks she suffered.
Despite the many challenges in her life she lived a life of passion; passion for love, painting and her beloved Diego. She has become an icon and example to many who face lifes tragedies, illnesses, chronic pain and heartbreak. It is with this in mind that we honor her life, death during the month of July.
