X-O is the artist moniker of Andenken Gallery and Battalion Boutique owner, Hyland Mather. X-O creates pieces from what he calls ‘Lost Objects’ which he collects from his ramblings through street and country, field and industrial waste spaces. He then turns these found objects into very bold and geometric compositions.
In his own words, “I make art from lost objects which I find on the way to, or near the location where these often large scale works are installed. It isn’t really a ‘green’ statement, it stems from my long love of art in urban or abandoned environments. Over time, my eye has been increasingly drawn to the ‘out of place’ things, be it non-syndicated Street Art, or piles or rubble in an otherwise tidy city scape, or a smashed barn or caved in building. As I have this long love affair with these types of artwork, both purposeful and accidental, it was a natural progression for me as a creator to start gathering bits and pieces of discarded ‘waste’ I find and assemble it into compositions I find aesthetically cool. It is a form of recycling and it is in tune with the current upcylcing or shabby chic ideal or whatever, but my motivation is chiefly the joy I get from making something lovely out of things that have fallen to waste. Things that were definitely lost, getting found again.”
