SLATE is pleased to announce the finalists for our Live Painting Event: Oakland Here and Now taking place September 18 from 6-8 pm at 474 25th St. in Oakland, across the street from SLATE gallery Artists Participating: Nite Owl • Cameron Thompson • Desi Mundo • Peskador
This event brings together four Oakland street artists who will produce artworks, live and outside, on large aluminum panels. Viewers will experience the creation of a painting from start to finish, as well as interact with the artists during and after their process.
Nite Owl, an Oakland-based artist, considers owls to be his medium of choice; they become the vehicles for pushing the boundaries of geometry and color. “My works are highly caffeinated and will slap you upside the head!” he says. In the graffiti world, “slaps” are stickers, digitally printed or hand-drawn, usually emblazoned with an artist’s signature character or design and are one of Nite Owl’s creative obsessions.
Cameron Thompson was inspired by graffiti and murals in Southern CA and was introduced to a wide variety of local artists there who helped spark his love for art. Now in Oakland, Thompson is part of a vibrant art scene that focuses on graffiti, murals, and mixed media, and for the past 10 yeas has shown at hundreds of galleries, community spaces, and venues, including Oakland Museum of California and RedBull Music Lab, among others. Recently, he was featured in Oakland Magazine as Artist of the Month.
Desi Mundo is the founder of the Community Rejuvenation Project which has produced more than 100 murals. He’s collaborated artistically with influential aerosol artists and was recognized with a “Best of the Bay” Award by the East Bay Express for his monthly youth art series. Desi has a long history of community organizing and public art advocacy as well.
Peskador is a self-taught artist born and raised in Chile. He has participated in various group shows both nationally and internationally, and currently lives in Oakland where he creates “visual guerrillas” expressed in mediums such as paintings, drawings, collages, prints, murals and mixed media.
