FRENCH ARTIST FUZI UVTPK VISTS SAN FRANCISCO FOR FIRST TIME;
TATTOOS AT GUERRERO GALLERY
Saturday, May 25, at Guerrero Gallery; by appointment only
On Saturday, May 25, French artist FUZI UVTPK will make his first‐ever trip to San Francisco,
where he will tattoo at Guerrero Gallery.
FUZI is a veteran writer, who dominated the trains and subways of Paris for more than a decade,
and developed a form of graffiti known as “Ignorant Style” in the mid‐1990s. “Ignorant Style was
based on how graffiti looked in New York in the early 1970s, and it was meant to appear like it
was made by a child who was just learning the art form—naïve but pure. It was a reaction to the
standardization of graffiti. You write your name how you want, and where you want. There are
no rules.”
In the last several months, FUZI had a tattoo residency at The Hole Shop in New York; solo
exhibitions in Berlin and Paris, where he tattooed actress Scarlett Johansson; and traveled to Los
Angeles where iconic photographer Estevan Oriol made a short film of him tattooing and
painting on a downtown rooftop. “It was cool to see FUZI get down,” Oriol says. “He knocked it
out sick.”
FUZI chooses to tattoo in unique locations, using streets, subway tunnels and art galleries as his
ephemeral tattoo studios. “I want to develop my vision of tattooing outside of the traditional
tattoo studio,” FUZI says. “Each of my tattoos is unique, never duplicated, and I execute them in
unusual places, because it leaves a mark on the memory, not just on the skin.”
Guerrero Gallery is the perfect venue for FUZI’s first time in San Francisco. Guerrero Gallery
represents a select group of exciting emerging and mid‐career artists, and provides a fresh and
inviting space to enjoy art. Challenging viewers, the norms, and itself, the gallery creates a space
with the notion of exploration and lack of boundaries.
FUZI will tattoo on Saturday, May 25, at Guerrero Gallery. No walk‐ins, appointments are
required. Email contact@fuzi‐uvtpk.com for an appointment.
