Shooting Gallery Project Space is pleased to present A Well Marked Path, featuring new works by Bay Area artist, Lauren Napolitano. The opening reception will be Saturday, October 12, from 7-11 pm, and the exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing through November 2, 2013.
In A Well Marked Path, Napolitano is following her own way home. A recent trip to New Mexico left an indelible impression in this new body of work, and a further study of traditional Mexican pottery and basket work inspired much of the artist’s new pattern work.
Working with antique porcelain dolls, hydroponic bulbs, old bottles, and even an old suede jacket, Napolitano is deepening her focus of painting on found objects. At least 80 of these will be on display in addition to 35 works on newsprint, book pages and altered cabinet card photos, ranging in size from 4×6” to 18×24” and four Mandela pieces, 12.5” in diameter, on acacia plant pollen filters.
Regardless of surface, Napolitano’s intricate markings are finely drawn in a delicate hand, without the aid of rulers to ensure a human element is left behind. In this way, A Well Marked Path, is an offering from the artist, a trail to follow and hold onto. Treasured mementos carefully culled through an ongoing search. “I love the feeling and act of discovery,” Napolitano reveals, “so I am always picking stuff up along the way. I can remember where I picked up every item I’ve collected and my home has become a nest of sorts…a place for safe keeping.”
