For his one-month residency, painter and installation artist Brett Amory surveys the gentrification process, documenting the change that occurs to a neighborhood over the course of a few years, but in reverse. He starts by creating a city block that has already been gentrified, and will subsequently transforms the buildings, sidewalks, and streets step by step until the neighborhood achieves its previous character.
Brett Amory was born in Chesapeake, Virginia, and in 1994 moved to San Francisco, where he lived in the Tenderloin neighborhood for 15 years. This transition altered his societal outlook and ultimately affected his decision to become an artist. He has had solo exhibitions at the Fort Wayne Museum (Indiana), Jonathan Levine Gallery (New York), Lazarides Gallery (London), and Hashimoto Contemporary (San Francisco), and has participated in numerous group exhibitions internationally.
