A three person show featuring new work by Reuben Rude, Bill Zindel, and Jose Arenas.
Parts & Labor emphasizes the working process of art-making – similar to a mechanic, an artist combines craft and skill with the use of materials to create a desired product. The finished piece is a marvel on its own, yet many hours were invested in the building of it. The three artists participating in Parts & Labor make their living in both the commercial and fine art realms.
Reuben Rude
Reuben Rude is the child of hippies who met in San Francisco during the Summer of Love. He grew up in the woods of Northern California and came back to San Francisco to study at the Academy of Art. He utilizes his expertise in drawing, painting, and illustration in both the creative and commercial realms, having shown in galleries, comic books, and magazines throughout the world. When he is not making art, he is working on his 100-year-old house.
Bill Zindel
Bill Zindel is an independent artist, illustrator, and designer who creates collages that are structured yet unrestrained, employing bold colors and patterns with geometric leanings and retro-futuristic tendencies. He draws inspiration from typography, signage, old records, and sacred geometry. His work as a designer informs his art formally, but his love of cutting, pasting, and collecting goes back to childhood. A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Bill lives in El Cerrito CA.
Jose Arenas
New York-based artist Jose Arenas creates works that explore dual identities, personal ritual, migration, and the displaced feeling that occurs from growing up in both California and Guadalajara. He combines decorative patterns, culturally-assigned symbols, and familiar abstract forms to create an emotionally resonant narrative that remains open to interpretation. Arenas received a BFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute (1995), and an MFA from UC Davis (2000). His work has been exhibited throughout the United States, and he teaches at Parsons, The New School for Design, and Kingsborough College.
